Homestead woodworks

handcrafting with nature

WELCOME TO OUR 2011 WORKSHOPS PAGE

June, July, and August we will be offering ongoing instruction on Working With Earthen Plaster. Come out and learn how to make and apply earthen plaster for covering straw bale walls and also how to create an earthen floor. Learn what makes a good plaster and the process and techniques for successful "mudding" in a hands-on environment. Answers to general questions on straw bale construction will be available for those that are new to this building method. A one day tutorial will begin at 9:00 A.M. and end at 5:00 P.M. The cost per participant is $65.00. Lunch will be included.

We will be available most weekdays throughout June, July and August . Email or call with a date that works for you.

About the Workshops

Workshops at the homestead will centre around sustainable construction and green living. We are planning workshops on building with logs, straw bale construction, and slipforming stone walls. We will be offering two day primer courses on these methods as well as week long workshops covering the individual building form. We will also be offering courses on twig furniture building, and hope to offer instruction on sustainable forestry practices, building hot water solar panels, wild crafting and other green living ideas.

Please watch for dates and details on upcoming workshops for 2010.

About the Instructors

Rick and Wendy Roman are into their 2nd decade of handcrafting. In 1989 they bought a parcel of land on the Bruce Peninsula and built their first piece sur piece log house from the cedar forest surrounding them. Since then they have built two other log houses, a very large straw bale workshop, as well as smaller structures and installations, including extensive stone work and rustic furniture . Rick and Wendy have been working with and instructing small groups for the last few years. Teaching sustainable construction is a natural extension of their desire to see others build in a way that empowers the owner/builder, while using resources wisely.

About the Homestead

The workshops will take place on a beautiful 50 acre parcel of land, located about half way up the Bruce Peninsula. Much of the instruction will take place in and adjacent to the new straw bale shop. On the property, participants will see the 2200 sq. foot piece sur piece log house, pond and the organic garden, which will supply much of the produce for our lunches.
we look forward to seeing you
